Iron and his owner Martyna (@newlife.ironandquest) are among the winners of the Food Book competition on Instagram, in which they won a free nutrition consultation. Iron is an eight-year-old Silesian gelding in light work, because he is only trained twice a week. His diet was built to support him after a severe bout of colic.
Because the vet recommended that cereals be left out of the diet entirely, the base of Iron's feeding is Care Muesli, fed only at breakfast. It is a cereal-free mix with a very low starch and sugar content (about 8% combined), based on fibre and on ingredients that support the digestive system of horses prone to gut problems. That recipe supplies steady energy, does not burden the gut and supports a healthy metabolism. With his morning meal Iron also receives selenium and vitamin E, which help keep the muscles elastic and support recovery. That matters especially in a horse that tends to be stiff.
Iron's dinner is based on grass cubes, a high-fibre, easily digested base that is particularly useful for a horse after colic surgery. The meal is completed with linseed, which has a protective effect on the digestive tract, and with Balanced Flowers, a blend of marigold, chamomile and daisy that supports digestion and a sensitive gut. In autumn and winter Iron also receives dried rosehip, a natural source of vitamin C, which supports immunity and the joints.
After training, twice a week, Iron gets Isotonic Mash as an extra recovery meal. The mash helps replace electrolytes lost in work, supports hydration and gut function, and because it is easy to digest it is a good choice for a horse with a history of digestive problems.
Iron's diet is balanced above all to protect and steady his sensitive digestive system after severe colic. A high share of fibre, no cereals and carefully chosen, easily digested ingredients support healthy gut function, soothe the digestive system and reduce the risk of colic returning. Because Iron works only twice a week, this diet is quite enough to meet his need for energy and nutrients.
