Wheat bran

Pelleted wheat bran is a valuable source of dietary fibre, supporting digestion and the work of the gut. It contains B vitamins and minerals that have a favourable effect on the coat and the skin. It can be added to the basic feed to increase the volume of the ration, which matters for nervous horses, for horses that eat too fast, or during recovery after illness. The pellet form is convenient to use and limits dust.

Brand:

Wheat bran is a by-product of milling wheat. Recommended for all types of horses and ponies, especially older horses, horses in recovery and horses with a sensitive digestive tract. For use as an addition to the basic feed or to oats, adding variety to the ration. Wheat bran can be fed dry, or wet in the case of older horses that have dental problems.

The product is rich in easily digested dietary fibre, which supports healthy intestinal peristalsis and regulates digestion, reducing the risk of constipation and indigestion. Because of its high fibre and energy content, wheat bran is best suited to horses that need to gain weight or hold their weight, whereas for horses that tend to be overweight its use should be limited and carefully balanced in the diet. The B vitamins it contains also support metabolism and healthy function of the nervous system, and the minerals, including phosphorus, benefit the condition of the coat and hooves.

It is worth remembering, though, that wheat bran is high in phosphorus and relatively low in calcium, so in horse feeding a diet that includes it must be balanced for the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (Ca:P), so as not to disturb bone mineralisation or the nervous system. With larger amounts of bran, calcium-rich feeds or supplements are recommended in order to even out the ratio. The product comes as a gentle pellet, so it is convenient to use.
