Natural horse feeding is based on the pattern of how wild horses eat: a large share of crude fibre, constant access to forage, and a limit on cereals, molasses and artificial additives. In theory this can sound like a challenge, but in practice more and more owners find a compromise by choosing feeds that contain no unnecessary additives, yet still support horses in everyday work or in recovery. That is why we created a muesli that fits the idea of natural feeding and at the same time meets the requirements of modern supplementation. Our mixes contain no molasses, no oats and no synthetic flavourings. Instead they are based on natural ingredients, herbs and dried flowers.
A fashion, or a real need? Natural feeding did not come from nowhere. It is a response to the growing number of lifestyle diseases in horses, such as laminitis, gastric ulcers, insulin resistance, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), excitability and behavioural problems. In many cases it turns out that limiting processed ingredients, providing constant access to forage and matching the diet more closely to the horse’s natural needs improves health. A natural diet supports the gut microbiota, steadies blood sugar and also helps maintain a healthy body weight.
It is worth remembering, though, that “natural” does not always mean “suitable”. A horse’s diet has to be well balanced for energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. A common mistake is a shortage of selenium, zinc or vitamin E when compound feeds are excluded altogether. Even on a diet based on hay and herbs, the right level of vitamins and minerals must not be forgotten, so it is worth using suitable supplements. Grazing horses without controlling the amount of sugars can also be dangerous, especially in early spring or after frost. Too much sugar can lead to laminitis, even in horses that seem healthy.
To sum up… Natural feeding is not a passing fashion. It is a conscious choice by a growing number of people, and a response to the real needs of the horse’s body. It is a return to the roots, but using modern knowledge. That is why it is worth choosing feeds with a natural, simple composition, without unnecessary additives. Natural feeding is an investment in your horse’s health and balance, every day!
