The individually chosen diet covers GentlemanFee's basic needs. The basic feeds that make up most of it, Basic and Turbo Pony, are based on dried alfalfa, which supplies high-quality fibre plus essential amino acids and calcium, and an optimum amount of slow-release energy without making a young horse hyperactive. That makes working together much easier. Turbo Pony also tops up the diet with the protein needed while he is maturing. Because GentlemanFee's training is getting harder, he needs extra energy, which the basic feed Sport provides, fed every day at lunch. At competitions the gelding also gets it at dinner.
His diet also includes a mash, prepared every day as a fourth meal at afternoon snack time. A horse aimed at sport should also get electrolytes so that he stays properly hydrated. They are not always eaten readily with the feed, as here, so giving them with the mash is a very good option.
In spring and summer the horse coughs, so at breakfast he gets the herbal respiratory supplement Light Breath with the basic feed. It helps him feel much better on warm days, when there is more pollen and dust in the air. In autumn and winter he gets the same supplement at snack time with the mash, because herbs fed warm work better. Echinacea purpurea in the product supports immunity, which matters especially at that time of year.
This diet lets the young horse develop in balance. It will be changed once he has built more muscle and finished growing, at about 5 years of age. Turbo Pony will then be replaced entirely by Sport, which, as his energy need rises, will also finally replace Basic.
